23. November 2024Ytri Tunga – meeting place with seals
Ytri Tunga, located on the southern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, will surprise you with its difference from the traditional black beaches of Iceland. Covered with golden sand and scattered boulders, this sandy beach creates a unique contrast with the turquoise waters of the ocean. Part of the shoreline is lined with rocks and low cliffs, which provide a prime resting place for seals. At first glance, the beach appears empty, but if you look closely, you’re sure to spot the heads of seals peeking out of the waves.
Watching seals in the wild
Ytri Tunga is known for its year-round seal sightings, but your best chances of spotting them are during the summer months. Typically, seals stay on the rocks close to the water. During our visit we saw about six seals swimming in the sea. Their heads popped up between the waves and seemed to be watching us curiously while showing off. Some were playing and nudging each other, others were rather solitary.
We were surprised that they were quite different from the seals in South Africa. Their skin and face were slightly different. Therefore, they were unique to us and we enjoyed their presence.
Conservation and respect for nature
When observing seals, keep a sufficient distance and do not disturb their natural habitat. Never approach them or try to attract them. Seals may appear friendly, but they are still wild animals that need their peace and quiet. In addition, not approaching is also crucial for your safety – if a seal feels threatened, it may react unpredictably. They are beautiful animals, sea dogs fo us, but they are not used to humans. They are afraid of us, so we shouldn’t get too close.
Wind Curtain
As with most Icelandic beaches, be prepared for the wind to be a constant companion at Ytri Tunga. Our experience confirms that the wind here can be very intense, but it also adds to the dramatic atmosphere of the place. Despite winds reaching 100 km per hour, we spent over an hour on this beach. It was raining, it was nasty and we were completely drenched, but we don’t regret a single minute at this place.
Sunsets
Ytri Tunga is an ideal place to watch the sunsets. Its golden sand combined with the red and orange hues of the sky creates a magnificent scenery. One lone bench just beckons you to sit on it and enjoy the play of colours.
