27. January 2023Mero Beach — oasis of tranquility and beauty
We’ve visited countless beaches around the world — from exotic lagoons in Asia to the Caribbean coastlines. Yet, Mero Beach in Dominica is different. At first glance, it appears peaceful and unassuming, but upon immersing yourself in its atmosphere, it instantly captures your heart. This beach enchanted us with its authentic charm, relaxing vibe, effortless beauty, and most of all, its black sand. For our final day in Dominica, we chose to spend it here — a place that felt like the perfect farewell to the island.

The Beauty of Mero Beach
Mero Beach stretches along Dominica’s western coast, offering a long expanse of dark volcanic sand. Unlike the white-sand paradises found elsewhere, this beach has a raw, untamed beauty. The soft black-and-gray sand glistens beautifully at sunset, reflecting the warm golden hues of the sky. Upon arrival, locals asked if we had come on a cruise ship, which seemed a bit odd at first. Later, we discovered that cruise passengers are charged different prices for food, drinks, and even sunbed rentals. Since we arrived independently, we fell into a different “category”, paying only 20€ for four sunbeds, which felt like a great deal—especially compared to the initial 30€ offer for just two.

Tall palm trees and blooming shrubs surround the beach, acting as natural decorations that enhance its charm.
Among them, you’ll find small houses, mostly apartments, where visitors can stay and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of Mero Beach.
Day Full of Fun
Dominica captured our hearts, and leaving felt impossible. So, we decided to approach the day differently — breaking our usual routine. While we never drink alcohol during the day, here we made an exception, starting the morning with a cocktail. Sadness gave way to joy as we realized we still had one more day, and with that, we embraced the carefree spirit of childhood.

Underwater scenery didn’t offer much excitement, so we focused on having fun in the water instead.
Games ranged from playful chases to horse battles, keeping the kids entertained for hours. One downside was the constant offers of joints whenever we stepped out of the water. Locals seemed to have built a steady business around tourists, persistently trying to convince us despite our clear refusals. Conversations with the younger children became essential, explaining the unfamiliar smell and what was being offered.
Swimming was only part of the experience — spending time in the beachfront restaurant added another layer of enjoyment. Refreshing cocktails and freshly prepared dishes brought the flavors of the Caribbean to life. Grilled fish and local specialties set the perfect tone for the evening, creating a laid-back, tropical atmosphere. With a drink in hand, sand beneath our feet, and the feeling that time had paused, the moment became unforgettable.

Fully organised beach
Beyond the restaurants, bars, and sunbeds, the beach offers souvenir shops where visitors can find local treasures. Some locals even provide beachside massages, with an hour-long session costing around 40 USD. Food and drink prices remain affordable, just like the rest of the island, making every meal a delight. The only small disappointment? No coconuts to be found, a surprising absence in such a tropical paradise. Mero Beach may not be a postcard-perfect destination, but that’s exactly its charm. Time seems to pause here, welcoming you into its warm, peaceful embrace.
With its natural beauty, local hospitality, and soothing ocean sounds, it became a place that truly captured our hearts.
No crowds, no noise — just tranquility, crashing waves, and an endless horizon that left us mesmerized.

A sunset that captivates
The sunset at Mero Beach is one of its greatest attractions. As the day slowly winds down and the sun begins its descent, the beach is wrapped in an enchanting glow. Our final moments in Dominica turned into something truly magical, as if the sun itself had decided to bid us farewell in grand style.

Settling into the sand, we embraced the moment, letting its beauty wash over us. The sun dipped lower, its light weaving through the waves, which softly kissed the shore. Above, the sky transformed — from brilliant blue to fiery orange and crimson, eventually settling into a deep, golden glow. Bathed in this light, the black-gray volcanic sand appeared even more mesmerizing. Gentle waves continued their rhythmic dance, reflecting every radiant sunbeam, turning the ocean into a mirror of light.

As the sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon, the sky wrapped itself in a soft twilight. Silence settled over everything, except for the whispering waves, continuing to share their stories. In that moment, it became clear — this was the perfect ending to our journey through Dominica. A farewell that reminded us that sometimes, the most beautiful moments are the simplest ones.
