Cas Abao Beach is one of Curaçao’s most beautiful locations, and if you’re looking for a place with white sand, turquoise water and palm trees to complete the exotic scenery, you’ve come to the right place. This beach was perfect in every way, including the underwater life.

View of the perfect Caribbean
When you arrive at the beach, you will be enchanted by the clear water, which plays with all shades of blue. Its soft sand is pleasant to walk on, and the shoreline is lined with palm trees and parasols that provide shade from the hot sun. The umbrellas are thatched, as are the bars, giving the beach a very natural feel. It’s just a pity that the sun loungers were plastic.

Even though there were many cars in the parking lot, we didn’t notice them on the beach. There are plenty of umbrellas far enough apart and the beach is quite large. So people were spread out, and there was no problem finding our privacy. This is aided by the lack of accommodations around and the fact that you can’t get to the beach except by rental car.

Overall, the beach looks like it was cut out of a catalogue, and we even liked it better than the famous Eagle Beach in Aruba. Maybe because it looked more natural, authentic and had a beautiful underwater world.

Wonderful underwater world
Although most of the corals are dead, you can still see some colourful ones, but especially a large variety of fish. Although the underwater world here is not as good as on Bonaire or Kleine Knip beach, it was still much better than in other countries.
Hundreds of small, inconspicuous fish swam around the coral, contentedly nibbling on the seagrass.

Although the tube coral didn’t attract many fish, the sight of the purple coral pulsating to the rhythm of the sea waves was truly mesmerising. This purple wonder seemed to breathe a life of its own, spreading its delicate branches in an endless dance with the seawater.

The first one we saw was a moray eel. She was only a few meters from the shore, and as soon as she saw us, she quickly hid in the rocks. We hadn’t had any luck with them while snorkelling so far, so it wasn’t until Curaçao that we got our wish. Watch out for them, though they have sharp teeth and can bite you if they feel threatened.

Another beauty was Smooth Trunkfish, who was not afraid of us at all. Be careful of her, too, though, as she can secrete a poisonous slime if she feels threatened. This is only dangerous to other fish, not humans.

And the last beauty that showed up was a cute Spot-fin porcupinefish. Although she has a bit of a dull expression and her eyes go in a different direction each time, she can be pretty dangerous because she’s venomous. Her body is covered in spines that erect when threatened, inflating into a spherical shape and deterring predators. We’ve encountered it in several countries, but we’ve never seen it inflate – unfortunately, not even here.

You will find everything at Cas Abao Beach
As we mentioned before, there are plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach for the great price of 3€. Right on the beach, there is a beach bar where you can have a variety of cocktails. At the back of the beach is a restaurant that serves a wide variety of food and drinks, from local specialities to international cuisine. Here you can enjoy fresh seafood, grilled dishes, salads and other delicacies.
There are also toilets, showers and changing booths.
Don’t forget to notice the weather station a short walk from the restaurant – it will surely entertain you.

Cas Abao Beach is private and only accessible by car
Cas Abao Beach is located on the west coast of Curaçao, approximately a 30-minute drive from Willemstad. You can reach it best by renting a car, as there is no public transport. Along the way, you’ll pass through a picturesque landscape full of wildlife and cactus fields.
Unlike some of the smaller beaches on the island, Cas Abao Beach is private. That doesn’t mean you can’t go here – you just have to pay to enter. We were very surprised by the price, which was only €5 per car. We were expecting considerably more. So if you go in a car of four, you only pay €1.25 per person.
The fee is collected on the way to the beach. When you go down the main road towards Cas Abao, after a few minutes, you will come to a barrier and a booth where they will ask you to pay an entrance fee. You then continue by car to the beach, where you’ll find free parking. In high season, you should arrive here in the morning, as there are not many parking spaces.
