The Bellapais Monastery rises proudly above the town of Girne. This majestic Gothic-style structure provides a unique window into the island’s rich history and culture. As you make your way towards the monastery, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the mountains that encircle this iconic landmark.
Right from the car park you can admire the imposing walls that once formed the monastery

The monastery, built in the 12th century, quickly became a significant center for monastic life. Its intricate decoration showcases the skill of medieval craftsmen. As you explore, you’ll notice the stunning details carved into the stone walls and the architectural elements that give this place its distinct charm.

Inside the monastery, you’ll be captivated by the expansive courtyard, framed by high walls and intricate architectural details. At the center stands a well that once provided the monks with water. Additionally, on the surrounding walls, you’ll find remnants of murals showcasing religious scenes and glimpses into the monks’ daily lives.
You can also visit the Bellapais Monastery from the inside. Unfortunately it closes at 18:00 sharp and we didn’t make it. We were sorry about that as we had read that the interior decoration is really worth a visit. Luckily we had it relatively on the way from Girne Fortress to Nicosia.
The area around the monastery is perfect for relaxation and reflection. Here, you can unwind in the peaceful ambiance of this historic spot, letting the atmosphere of the past wash over you. Entire surroundings are beautifully framed by mountains, while the coastline offers a captivating view that naturally draws your eyes back to the Girne Fortress.
Or you can enjoy a spectacular sunset over the surrounding mountains.

If you go from the monastery towards Nicosia, pay close attention to the route. There is an interesting statue on one of the hills by the main road.
