Laganas Beach

The longest beach on the island offers not only fine golden sand, gently sloping coastline and crystal clear sea, but also an unforgettable swimming experience with sea turtles. Laganas beach is one of the nesting areas of the Kareta turtles, which are here in large numbers during the summer months. Swimming with them is an experience of a lifetime.

How to get here?

The beach is located on the eastern side of the island and can be easily reached by car or bus from the capital Zante. . Everything you need can be found on the beach and in town, so you don't even need a car unless you want to explore other parts of the island. The beach offers all kinds of services, from sunbed hire, numerous bars and restaurants to pedalo and boat hire. Due to its size, it's never crowded, so you can find a quiet spot here too.

Quiet beach, unforgettable experience

The great advantage is the shallow depth even a few tens of metres from the shore. Not so shallow that you can't swim in it, but enough to not be afraid to go further, whether on a pedalo or a float. There are no strong sea currents, so there is no danger. The turtles stay further off shore, at a depth of about 4-5 metres, so you can dive down to them.

Another beauty that showed herself to us

The turtles were present all day during our visit. We met them all the time, whether it was morning, noon or afternoon. However, most were in the morning and fewer in the late afternoon.

In addition to turtles, you can encounter many different and interesting fish right at the shore, as well as small starfish. We found the first one washed up on the sand and then we found three more. However, it is important to respect these animals and leave them in the water.

Ideal for families with children

This beach is ideal for families with children, as the fine sand is a magnet for all ages. No waves and shallow water make the beach safe for smaller children. Older children will appreciate snorkelling and diving or chasing turtles.

If you rent a boat, you can also explore the nearby Turtle Island and its hidden caves and beaches. At the same time you will have a wonderful view of the whole beach and its surroundings. For the more adventurous, there is the option to head south and see the beautiful cliffs and beaches it hides. We didn't go there because the kids couldn't get enough of the turtles, so we spent not one, but two days there, and even that wasn't enough for them.

City Vibrations

The small town of Laganas is known for its life and summer vibes. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. It's the party part of the island for young people, but at the same time the beach is a protected area. If you don't need the hustle and bustle or are on a trip with small children, you'll find peace and quiet in the side streets. Everything takes place on the main street leading to the beach, so just choose accommodation a little further away. We stayed 5 minutes from the beach and didn't hear a thing.
