6. August 2021The town of Alcamo – a mosaic of colors and atmosphere
We only came to Alcamo to spend the night — just a stopover between Segesta and Palermo. But the town left us speechless. It had a charm unlike anywhere else we’d seen in Sicily. Many of the places we visited have already faded from memory, but Alcamo remains vivid. Even though it’s not on the coast, its historic centre has so much character you don’t even miss the sea. Narrow alleys, elegant facades, and mosaic details followed us at every turn, wrapping the town in a quiet, unexpected beauty.

A center full of mosaics and craftsmanship
Alcamo’s center is lively yet keeps the calm of a smaller town. Everywhere we looked, colorful ceramic tiles caught our eye — classic Sicilian majolica. Found in pavement, on walls, benches, facades, even around doorways. Some showed floral designs, others traditional Sicilian patterns or scenes from local life. It felt like the whole town was telling its story through color and pattern.

Above the narrow streets, colorful ribbons and strings of lights often hang overhead, giving the town a festive feel even outside of holidays. In some parts of the center, we even spotted bright umbrellas suspended in the air. The kids were thrilled — they didn’t want to leave. We couldn’t get them out of the old town. All those colors and lights sparked pure joy and a sense of wonder in them.

Historic buildings and hidden corners in Alcamo
As we walked through Alcamo, we passed church after church — just like in many Sicilian towns. But here, they felt more modest. Maybe it was because they didn’t stand out, blending in with the surrounding houses. Then suddenly, a small square would open up in front of us, often lined with palm trees, where locals gathered and chatted by a fountain.
Alcamo isn’t the kind of place that stuns you with one grand monument. Its charm lies in the overall impression. A harmony of small details that come together to form a perfect picture. Our only regret was not having more time. We arrived late and only managed an evening stroll and a great dinner. If we ever return to Sicily, we’ll make sure to spend a full day here.
